In 1982, Germantown Cablevision installed a $150,000 access studio in Germantown High School (GHS) as part of its franchise agreement with the City of Germantown. Recognizing the studio's potential as a vital community asset, the City of Germantown allocated a substantial portion of its cable franchise fees to expand the studio and purchase additional equipment. In return, Germantown High School committed to collaborating with community groups, public organizations, and governmental agencies to develop new programming ideas under the Access Together Project. This initiative paved the way for GHS-TV to produce diverse public, government, and educational access programs.
With students serving as technical staff and community volunteers as producers and talent, GHS-TV began to operate as a professional educational broadcast station. Faculty and staff provided essential supervisory support, while an executive director, engineer, and business manager guided students through every production phase. This foundation of real-world, hands-on learning continues to define the GHS-TV experience.
Germantown High School Television (GHS-TV) now serves as the primary video communication asset for Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), delivering vital information to teachers, parents, and administrators about educational events, district activities, and key achievements. As a model of a professional television network, GHS-TV operates under the rigorous four-year academic curriculum provided by Germantown High School’s Fine Arts Department. Students manage every aspect of the station, from serving as General Manager and Programming Director to Creative Services Director, acquiring both technical skills and leadership experience.
