Crosstalk is a bi-weekly, student-produced interview program that has been a cornerstone of Germantown High School Television (GHS-TV) since its debut in 1984, making it the longest-running program on the channel. This year, the GHS-TV students modernized the show’s format, giving it a fresh, podcast-like aesthetic and incorporating more controversial topics to engage audiences. The result is a dynamic and thought-provoking show that appeals to young viewers while remaining accessible to all ages.The revamped format consists of two segments. In the first segment, the host introduces the issue, followed by a discussion featuring two professional experts who present differing viewpoints on the topic. In the second segment, the host moderates a peer panel, where students share their perspectives, expressing agreements or disagreements and exploring the issue from a youth-focused lens. Topics covered range from lighthearted and entertaining to serious and relevant issues affecting young adults in today’s society.The production process for Crosstalk is rigorous, with students researching community-relevant topics and presenting ideas during weekly production meetings. Episodes are scheduled two weeks in advance, giving the student producers ample time to arrange for guests, prepare visuals, and ensure all elements are in place. After the show airs, students follow up with thank-you notes to guests, showcasing their professionalism. Each episode is shot using a sophisticated five-camera setup and incorporates visually appealing and informative graphics, ensuring a polished production. The show airs ten times during its programming week, broadcast on GHS-TV’s web channel and public access channels. Crosstalk continues to bridge the gap between students and adults, informing the Memphis-Shelby County School District community—and beyond—about important local, state, and national issues. With students selecting the topics, the show resonates deeply with young viewers while delivering a sophisticated and engaging production for audiences of all ages.

Crosstalk

On this special edition of our award-winning talk show, Crosstalk, we celebrate the rich history of Memphis music. Joining us is the legendary Bob Tucker, manager of the iconic Bill Black Combo—the band that opened for The Beatles’ 1964 U.S. Tour and toured England with Eric Clapton. We’re also excited to welcome esteemed GHS alumnus Ted Horrell, Superintendent of the Lakeland School District and founder of the band The Monday Night Card. Ted will join GHS student Trevor, an aspiring musician and drummer with dreams of forming his own band, for an inspiring and insightful conversation.
